Teacher Roundup 01.26.24

ON WRITING: Startup guru Paul Graham is also a fairly prolific writer, and this essay on how writing is more than the capture of ideas — it's also the generation of ideas — might be very useful to set up an essay or paper assignment on a complex topic

CULTURE: Related to previous post, here's a video from Tim Ferriss of "Four-Hour Workweek" fame on the same topic:

Without writing, it’s very hard to freeze your thinking on paper so that you can sharpen it

INDEPENDENT LEARNING: Nice post here from George Couros on self-directed learning, mental health, and autonomy Atlantic links to a series of articles on boredom that might be useful for discussion.

MATH: Really nifty post on the history of math, suitable for use from elementary to high school classrooms.

USING AI IN CLASS: Some adventurous teacher over at Ditch That Textbook has documented their efforts to use ChatGPT to create choose your own adventure stories for their history class!

ASSIGNMENT IDEA: I often remind my chemistry and physics students that Einstein famously said you don't understand anything until you can explain it to your grandmother. So obviously I dug this post about an assignment which requires students to create video lessons explaining complex concepts to five-year-olds! (It even comes with sample work and lesson plans!)

MUSIC: Occasionally an artist makes one perfect album and vanishes. "Love and War and the Sea in Between" by Josh Garrels is one such album. And you can listen to the whole thing for free on Bandcamp!
