24 // Memoir From Antproof Case

Memoir From Antproof Case by Mark Helprin | ***** | I'd never read Helprin, and picked this one up on a recommendation from a Twitter friend. Very glad I did, and I've already ordered my next Helprin book. This story, told from the perspective of an old man recounting his life's (extreme) adventures to his stepson before he dies, is simply elegant. The writing is elegant, the story is magical, there's an eminently quotable line every ten pages or so. Simply a marvelous book, though its density made me take it much more slowly than I typically read. Glad I did. This book demands savoring, not rapid consumption.
