03 | Sun Tzu's Art of War (Graphic Novel, ill. Pete Katz) | Reading Log 24-25

If you're wondering "How can I get middle school students interested in a nonfiction book written several hundred years before the Bible?" this is your answer.

The animation isn't great, but it's good enough to provide a pleasant backdrop to the text, which is presented as a series of lessons from Sifu, an aging warrior tutoring Liu, a young boy from his village.

The text of Sun Tzu's treatise on war is interspersed well with conversations between the tutor and his protege, and the last third involves practical application of the lessons as the small village is forced to defend itself against attack.

I would have read this until the cover fell off when I was eleven. Heck, I'm 45 now, and I thoroughly enjoyed it yesterday.
